…My start up life in the Netherlands

‘My Father, Alan Carter’

Now In Print and Online

At 6 foot 6 inches tall, my father Alan Carter could always be described as a larger than life figure.

I poured my heart into writing this biography, capturing his life as a teenager joining The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and his love of scouting and working with young people. His voice comes through, from his infamous fishing blog at breakingrods.com, detailing his fishing adventures across the UK, Gibraltar, USA and S. Africa. With his signature catch-phrases like ‘Isn’t it exciting!’ and ‘It’s a challenge’ my father was always enthusiastic.

If you want to be inspired on how to live a life, then this is for you.

Reviews

‘Comprehensive and honest capturing his extraordinary drive and charisma. I found it fascinating. There are not many like him around anymore and more’s the pity. A fitting tribute and a priceless family record.’

‘Rachel, congratulations on your book. I couldn’t put it down.

You have done a fantastic job with it. It is no mean feat to write a book about the phenomenon that was Alan Carter. You threaded all the strands of his legendary life together in such a skillful way. Well done! Such poignancy in the last two chapters reading Alan’s personal take on the rapidly increasing imminence of his own demise; extraordinarily touching.

Thank you for doing this. I know it was, and always should have been, a very personal and family project, but for those of us not in the family, we wouldn’t have been able to learn more about Alan’s life had you not persevered with the book.

Thank you’

‘For those who knew Alan Carter, Rachel Art’s biography will be greatly cherished as a part of the large Carter family history. The grandchildren and great-grandchildren, down through time, will sit and read and smile.

For those who never met Alan Carter, this history suggests how others might approach recording their own family history. It provides an insight into an ordinary yet extraordinary man and the daughter who was so driven to tell his story. It is simply a love letter to a father.’

‘Thank you for the copy of your excellent book. it gives a true depiction of his essence and is extremely readable. You have clearly inherited his skills in communication and perseverance in completing this work. I am in no way religious and tend to view many who are so with askance. In Alan’s case he was totally genuine. The Church was clearly a major driving force for him and I wonder what sort of person he would have been had he not discovered it.

I will never forget Alan. He was head and shoulders above most in more ways than one.’

‘How to sum up, in one book, the life of a man whose influence and contributions to this world go far beyond its boundaries?! Well, Rachel Arts has succeeded in doing just that, and much more! A heartfelt and beautifully written account of an exceptional husband, father, brother, son, employee, mentor, leader of young and old, man of faith, lover of fishing, and friend to all. Such a heartwarming and delightful read; I was captivated from beginning to end. Feeling all the emotions, I laughed, cried and smiled all the way through. A character as extraordinary as Alan Carter is a rare gem, but if everyone had even the tiniest piece of the commitment, dedication, faith, courage, integrity, love, and genuine desire for the success of others that he displayed, the world would be a much better place.’
